Moving to MV?

Recently I got several messages about start to work on RPG Maker MV. Instead of answering them one by one, I'd just dump my answer on this post. Plus a bit venting

Honestly, I'm a bit hesitant to start to work in RPG Maker MV due to these reasons. Some of them are my disappointment towards the tool

  • It's fairly a new engine. There is no much free resources released yet since we literally got a different standard resource format so that we couldn't use our VX format resources in general
  • Creating new project take 400mb because there is no RTP. Which mean 3 project is equal as 1.2GB. I know we could work around it, but it just troublesome.
  • It doesn't support MIDI. I know it's obsolete music format. But it's the best method to compress your game size into a friendly size.
  • I'm new to Javascript in general. I need to know all of their detail to start working on it. I won't make plugin anytime soon.
Thus, if you expect me to port my scripts as MV plugins, don't. Even if I do, I may couldn't answer when you have issues. But, I'm learning in very slow pace. It was due to my disappointment to our new RM tool honestly.

Plus, I don't think I'm gonna leave VXA anytime soon by knowing this. Let see if some of you still love to make game in RPG Maker VXAce.

  1. I hear ya there man. MV didn't fully live up to my expectations. I have a couple projects on Ace I'd rather work on first. I am not in any making mood to try another game on MV.

  2. To be honest I don't have any especial feelings about MV but the possibility of exporting to other platforms. There are few things better and other things worse than VXA.

    Of course, if you make the decision of staying on VXA, it will be up to you and I would say that we will miss all your awesome job at programming on MV. When that moment arrives, tell us so we can start fixing the pieces of our heart ^^'.

    1. Thank you. I may skip MV and move in next generation (if it's better). I'd stay in VXA as I didn't see any reason why I should start my journey in MV as I also see myself as a developer than full-fledged scripter. I enjoy making game too

  3. I do like VX Ace, but I'm trying new things. I say that MV and VX Ace both have their pros and cons, but MV's biggest lack is Midi compatibility. Everything feels hheavier in comparaison.

  4. I love Rpg Maker VX Ace, i will not leave that awesome engine for nothing in the world because the best script for battles is for Ace, and that is Theo SBS.... Your script is amazing man, MV is still shit if you ask me, nothing new, only better screen resolution, a little addon to tileset, and make custom battlers...ah, and more items and hp limit. But i suggest you keep going with Ace bro, because people like me are still using Ace.

  6. I simply don't think MV is better than Ace, as some people still preffer XP over Ace. In my opinion Enterbrain makes their busines and rather than making a new engine that makes everyone switch to that one for being the master RPG Maker, they make different engines so we can chose the one we like the most.
    I'll stick with Ace, some of the reasons are those you pointed out, and besides, I don't care about the resolution or playing on a phone. I'm closer to be a hardcore gamer and creator, I don't really care either about playing on a cellphone (Though some people do, and having the option is not a bad thing) So I don't think I'll make a game friendly to be played while you are on the street or waiting a bus, for example.

    Anyway, If you stick with Ace, cool, your scripts are some of the best and TSBS is by far the best battle script Ace has. If you switch to MV, MV plugins will be boosted because you make some neat stuff.
    But on an egoist way to see this, I rather see you making Ace scripts, rather MV plugins.

    1. This kind of controversy is somehow like how people like XP and VX differently. When we only have 2 kind of RPG Maker, I could explain the pros and cons over the two engine (let alone the 2k3 because it wasn't even legal). When the VXA come up, it was totally an overhaul of VX and I do think VXA is better than the previous RPG Maker series.

      I'm a mobile gamer as well, but I don't think playing RPG Maker games on my mobile would be fun. I prefer a simple games to kill the time.

      And it's good to see you support me to do more in VXA. And seriously, I miss my day to work in RPG Maker stuff, but can't do it atm.

  7. Yes, I'm a bit dissapointed on MV engine. maybe I was expecting too much from it. My biggest dissapointment is that porting my project to android is kind like pain in the arse, while I hope it to be something like click and just wait it being compiled.

    But actually, I feel that MV have a great potential that couldn't be reached by Ace. For example, it's using Pixi.js which mean you can do fancy things on graphics using "native" functions.

    I hope that you could move to MV and port your scripts there.

    1. 48 x 48 px means 196 more pixels than default VX ace. It means more workspace for artist. I know you are a great artist too. Please consider about this.

    2. Just move your "unused" files on apppath/New Data folder. It could reduce A LOT of new project file size. In case you want to do this. Make a new project first so have a backup of "original" New Data. (I forget to do this so I could tell you, lol)

    3. Yea, I hate the fact that MV does not natively support MIDI and JPEG, we're on the same boat on this case.

    4. Basic workflow is still same. The biggest problem I've encountered so far is to think "AJAX"-ish. On Ace, everything is linear. Next function will never be called until current function is done. On JS, you can do things while waiting your music to be fully loaded. Pro: multi task, cons: try to do anything fancy with your music and it will give you an error.

    Hope this could change your mind

      1. Yes, I have an artist friend and he totally like this feature on MV. But, I'm mostly programmer, my artist side is only to draw portrait. Not to make something fancy

      2. An extra work that's not even exist in VXA. I don't like it.

  8. JS is really hard and not user friendly for beginner.
    i just encounter problem with asynchronous load map data...
    somehow it caused $dataMap is null when running at browser ONLINE. this problem didn't show up when running the game locally...
    also many things i done cannot fix it yet. and reading our beloved "mbah google" didn't help much since the JS is really wide range of usage... some solution only work in Jquery, Coffee Script, ES6, etc...

    so testing plugins i made also become pain in the as$ because i have to test it online too to make sure it work online.

      Well, masih mending bisa ngetes online. Kalo saya pake usb tether yang kena hujan langsung edge. XDDD

      Tapi setidaknya JS lebih membuka wawasan. Banyak hal baru yang bisa dipelajari (seperti call, apply, sama bind) hahaha

    2. there's another problem...
      when i create another plugin for blend color and tone color for event graphic.
      when i test it in test play it work... when i test it in firefox online it work... but when i test in chrome... it doesn't work. wtf...

      btw gan... pake usb tether emang sakit... dulu pake itu jg. sudah mahal. lemot pula (krn diluar pulau jd lemot). akhirnya sekarang pake speedy. anehnya ya... speedy saya harusnya yg paket 512kbps waktu apply kemaren. tapi sudah 3 bulan ini speed saya kok jadi 10mbps ya. bayarnya tetap. mudah2an permanen hehehehe. curiganya salah setting. soalnya sepupu saya di daerah... pernah pasang indihome yg 10mb. salah setting jadi 100mb. download film 1 menit. lebih cepet donlod film daripada ngopi film yang sama ke hdd external. lol. tapi akhirnya ketahuan dan balik jd 10mb. bayarnya lebih mahal dari saya.

  10. I am still using VXACE because, it's the only engine i have...
    Proyek game aja belom kelar, belajar script VXACE aja udah mati-matian masa harus belajar JAVA untuk bisa mbikin proyek di MV? BTW, mas THEO... Bisa mbikinin sprite char "little red ring hood" gak? susah cari yg free w/out license.

  11. I actually think VX Ace is better then MV too.

    I cannot wait to see what you have next. Your TSBS is still the greatest battle system and shall always be for Ace (and maybe even be the best among anything that ever comes out in the future for MV).

  12. Honestly i really really want to use MV cuz i love its new mapping system, but due to how laggy it is and how terrible it is when running on Android. Well... Right now i'm still sticking with Ace, i have projects haven't finished. But after i've finished everything, i'll move to MV. Hopefully they'll release an update soon.

  15. VXace is good enough, actually i like using it instead of using MV. So, if you keep working on the script of VXace, that will be the best thing for me and my project :D
